Iris adored the slight dewy air as spring turned into summer. It was still cool out, but the warmth of the sun would soon heat it to unbearable levels, at least for her. She preferred fall, thank you very much. It was a respectable season that allowed you to wear comfy sweaters and warm drinks. Oh, how she longed for that season to be approaching rather than the scorching heat.

She had been alone on the walk to her favorite coffee shop. The same routine she's had for the last few years. Grab her favorite drink of whichever season and sit outside to watch the world wake. Now, there was a shadow at her side. Alec had shown up halfway through her walk, dressed impeccably in a tan three-piece suit. She wondered if the man wore anything but suits, even if they did cause her thoughts to turn in a licentious direction. It was hard not to. Men rarely wear them anymore.

Shaking off that thought, she continued on the silent journey with the one driven desire. Coffee. Caffeine. The lifeblood of any librarian. Besides books, that is. She smiled at the funny thought.

"What has you smiling?"

She rolled her eyes at Alec and wove around the harried businessman, not paying attention to others around him. Iris didn't miss the glare that Alec had thrown him as they passed.

"Just a thought."

Alec chuckled and stepped closer, sliding something into her hand. "Penny for your thoughts, then?"

"How long have you been holding onto that to use it?" Iris raised a brow at him and tucked it into her pocket.

"You don't want to know."

She let out a laugh that had the tension leaving her body. Iris still didn't answer his original question, but the air between them felt light and fun. She was walking through one of the small patches of grass that the city had on her morning walk. Iris let out a giggle as she kicked the Dandelions that had changed into the white puffballs. The seeds popped up into the air in a small cloud that drifted away. There, in the middle of them, sat a Dandelion that was still yellow. She gasped, making Alec pause to stare at her.

Iris bent down and plucked the flower, holding it up triumphantly to Alec. "A dandelion! It must be the last one of the season."

He raised an eyebrow at her. Iris felt the impulsive thought hit her and she acted before she could stop herself. The flower was shoved into her mouth and she chewed, making exaggerated happy noises. Alec was staring at her in shock. She swallowed the flower, though she tried to hide how bitter it was. She licked her fingers and tossed the stem to the ground.

"Oh, I'm sorry. How rude of me. I should have saved you some."

"No thanks, Sid." Alec brushed his pants and walked off with a deep laugh.

The cart had a squeaky wheel and was wobbly. It was the most annoying thing, but of course, they didn't have the funds that month to replace it. It aggravated her enough that Iris might buy some WD-40 at the store tonight so she'd have some peace tomorrow. For the moment, she'd have to deal.

There was a decent stack of returns and she was wandering to the back of the library. She had figured out that it was easier to make her way from the deeper parts of the shelves to the front, so she didn't have to backtrack. Work smarter, not harder, her mother always told her. She smiled at the memory that came up before focusing back on her task at hand. First was the history section.

Iris had been shelving and made it through half her stack when the sound of shoes clicking on the marble flooring made her turn. She held the book close to her chest as a man rounded the corner. He had taken the jacket off, showing the rest of the three-piece suit. It was a dark blue that stood out in the bright lighting. It was tossed over a shoulder, showing off that he had rolled the sleeves of the white dress shirt. The sight of his forearms was enough to make her flush. They were exactly as she had imagined, covered with tattoos of all kinds. The dark ink flowing over the skin like a living artwork.

Maybe she needed to cut out reading so many smutty romances.

"Well, hello, dove."

Iris eyed him, "Alec. I see you're haunting me as usual. What brings you in today?"

He chuckled and hummed, eying the stacks around them. He ran a hand over the spines nearest to him. "Just checking things out. Seeing if something catches my eye."

She could feel his assessing gaze sweep over her. Part of her wished that she had worn something a little more formal than jeans and a sweater. Another part of her hoped that maybe he would not find it so attractive and leave her alone. She refused to admit that there was a sliver of hope that the handsome man who frequently sought her out was interested.

Iris let out a snort and turned to put the book in her arms back on the shelf in its proper place. "I didn't think that you could read. Color me surprised."

There was a shuffle of cloth behind her before she felt a warm breath on the back of her neck and an arm wove around her middle. She was pulled into a hard chest.

"Well, aren't you a little spicy today, dove. Did someone bother you?"

"You."

He tsked and then chuckled. "It's hard not to bother you, Iris. You draw me like a moth to a flame. I'd happily get burnt by that wicked tongue of yours if that meant I had your attention."

He let go and stepped back, allowing her to face him, where she flushed bright red at the intense gaze. For the first time, Iris felt more than slight annoyance or exasperation. This was the first time that he had initiated more than just the gentle touch here and there. Now she had to figure out how to get her heart under control while she watched him casually stroll from the aisle.

"Until later, dove. Enjoy your shift."

Her breath caught in her throat as her back hit the brick wall. The bustle of the city came alive around them as the world woke. The jingle of the bells of her familiar coffee shop told her that they were drawing attention, but she ignored it to stare at the man who had placed a hand next to her head. Alec was dressed in his usual three-piece suit, with only the barest hint of tattoos peeking above his collar. She noticed that one was still fresh. A dove. She flushed bright red and her eyes snapped up to meet his in shock.

Alec chuckled and tucked a stray piece of auburn hair behind her ear. His fingers traced softly down her neck, leaving goosebumps in their wake. She shivered, and her heart thundered in her chest. Alec had been very gentle with her and had not rushed his advances. He was like a predator that waited patiently for his prey to move.

People walked by them but both ignored them to focus on the building tension that had built between them over the last few months. She blushed lightly as his stance shifted, bringing his body closer to hers.

"You always test me, dove. You test my patience. You test my resolve and I am losing. I am losing the will to deny myself your presence. You have become my addiction, Ms. Summers."

She fluttered her lashes and her eyes dropped to the ground in embarrassment. One of her arms wrapped around her waist and she hunched forward slightly. Someone like him wanted her? Why?

"You don't want this," her voice barely audible. "You don't know me, Alec."

"Do I need to know how to breathe in order to live? No, dove, I don't. But I want to. I want you."

She shook her head, but two fingers curled under her chin and lifted it so her eyes met darkened blue. His palm slid up to cup her jaw, which she leaned into.

"I want you, Iris. I don't know what this is or where it will go, but I want you. So where you go, I go with you. Where I go, I want to bring you with. I want to give you the world."

His thumb traced her cheek softly as she closed them, savoring that moment. She could feel his heavy gaze on her face, watching. Waiting.

"Okay." She opened her eyes. "Then show me."

Everything had been lovely that morning. The cool fall breeze trailed leaves in the wind. The smell of the coffee in her hand kept her warm inside and out. Her sweater was soft against her skin, making the day a comfortable one. She watched as people passed through the small coffee shop, the bells above the door tinkling each time it opened nearby. It was the routine that would set the tone for the rest of the day.

A chair slid out next to hers, and she snapped her gaze to the man who had her frowning. His crisp three-piece suit barely creased as he crossed a leg to lounge back in the seat he now occupied.

"Don't frown like that, sweetheart. It'll give you wrinkles and that beautiful face doesn't deserve that."

She wrinkled her nose at the endearment and rolled her eyes, "Then stop crashing my peaceful mornings."

"How else would I be able to say good morning to my favorite person?"

"Alec, what do you want?" she sighed. There went her morning of peace.

He smirked and that was all it took for her to get a flutter. His gaze was locked on her face and he must have caught it because the smirk only grew into a full grin. Her eyes flickered down to gaze at the hand that rested gently on the top of the table. It always amazed her how someone could sit through the pain of tattoos on their hand for so long.

Both of his hands and wrists were covered with them, which always made her wonder if he had full sleeves or even the whole body. There were hints of them peeking above his collar, so she knew he had something. Her thoughts trailed off and she tried to focus on her coffee instead of the man beside her.

She must have gotten lost in the blankness of enjoying the weather because there was a feather-light touch. She jerked back for a second and looked at Alec. His hand was near her face and she raised an eyebrow at him. That had been a daring move. He'd never touched her beyond the small hand touch here and there.

"You looked so peaceful, dove. I just brushed your hair back when it got in your face."

He sat up from where he was lounging, so that he was closer to her. She didn't move away when he reached out. Their eyes locked across the table. Rough knuckles traced over her cheeks so tenderly and down her jaw. Her heart rate picked up and a breath caught in her throat. His eyes darkened at her reaction.

"You are so beautiful, dove."

There was a cough, and Alec pulled away, leaving her with a sense of disappointment. They turned to see another man dressed nicely, though not to the same degree as Alec.

"I apologize sir, but there is a situation that needs your attention."

She watched as Alec's posture changed and the look on his face grew colder. He gave the man a nod and stood up, brushing the invisible dirt off his tailored suit. He stepped around the table to stand in front of her. Without preamble, he took her hand and bent over, laying a kiss on her palm. She flushed and gasped at the intimate gesture.

"Have a lovely day, Ms. Summers. I will see you sometime soon."

The only thing she could do was watch him walk away. Suddenly, the day hadn't turned as sour as she expected. No, it felt a little bit warmer at the unexpected affection.
